LYALKA is a circus show presented by some of Ukraine’s most talented young artists. In cooperation with the Kyiv Academy for Circus and Variete, the show reunites a group of eight performers who had been evacuated from Kyiv to Berlin and Budapest in the spring of 2022. The show is directed by the academy’s head choreographer Gulnara Savenko.
In the beginning, there is a dream that, everyone might have dreamt of in their childhood: the toys in the child’s room suddenly become alive. Behind the colourful world of fantasy, there is an inspiring story. By using the metaphor of a doll, LYALKA tells a story of growing up and becoming independent (LYALKA is the Ukrainian word for “doll”). Just as others control the movements of a doll, the young Lyalka is subject to expectations and manipulations by her environment. It reflects the basic challenge of adolescence: how to develop your independent character in the conflict between your own wishes and external constraints. This conflict is told through acrobatics, dance and physical theatre. The combination of genres provides a universal non-verbal language to make the story approachable for an international as well as multi-age audience. After culminating in the total entanglement and collapse of Lyalka as a marionette, a message of hope and self-empowerment is created: If you remove the strings that restrict you, you can grow beyond yourself. This message also relates to the lives of the young performers who have been forced out of their known environment by the circumstances of the war in Ukraine.
